I commenced work in 1971 with a local authority building department in Derby, England as a building quantity surveyor. more… I started my professional quantity surveying career in 1975 moving to Sheffield to a regional health authority before emigrating to New Zealand in 1987 to join Rider Hunt.
In 1993 I secured a role with Brown & Associates and in 1996 became a director of the rebranded Brown & Quartermaine. In 2000 B&Q joined an international practice and became Page Kirkland NZ and in 2009 this was restructured back into the independent BQH

My expertise ranges from project feasibility analysis, life cycle modelling, cost planning and estimating, value management, tender procurement, evaluation and analysis, contract financial administration and finalisation. I have achieved an enviable track record of projects completed on budget.

When not at work I like to travel, socialise with friends and family and enjoy the movies & theatre

I commenced my career in 1994, as a cadet quantity surveyor at Brown & Associates in Wellington. more… In 1996 I transferred to the associated firm, Page Kirkland, in Sydney, where I was a quantity surveyor and then from 1998 a senior quantity surveyor until moving to their Dubai office as an associate in 2001. In 2007 I returned to New Zealand to be a director of Page Kirkland in Auckland, which was restructured into BQH in 2009.

My expertise ranges from budgeting and estimating to administration, engineer to the contract in NZS3910, expert witness and negotiation. I also teach measurement and estimating to degree students in Auckland.

When I’m not at work I like to spend time with my family – on the harbour or taking advantage of the many fantastic pastimes this country offers.

Rachel Mackey

I commenced my career in the construction sector in 2010 as an Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer for a major multinational infrastructure construction company. more… I joined BQH as the Office Manager in 2005 while also studying via correspondence at Massey University for my Bachelor of Business majoring in Human Resource Management and Marketing. After graduating, I have since moved into the role of National Business Manager utilizing experience with education to ingrate human resource management strategies to the overall business strategy to meet business goals and provide tangible outcomes.

My areas of expertise include administration, document management, people, performance & change management, business development, business accounting, and strategic planning.

I am a keen netballer and other social sports but considering retirement after 2 ACL reconstructions. When I’m not at work I enjoy travelling and creating new experiences and memories with my family.

Ian Morton

I qualified as a QS in 1980 and worked in the UK and South Africa before emigrating to New Zealand in 1986. more… From 1991 to 2000 I was in Dubai employed as the Chief QS for local Architectural/Engineering company Arif & Bintoak. Returning to New Zealand I joined Page Kirkland in Auckland, which became BQH in 2009.

My expertise covers all aspects of quantity surveying including cost planning, estimating, contract procurement and post contract administration.

My leisure time is occupied with my wife, children and grandchildren but I do manage to squeeze in a game or two of squash each week.

Rory Leonard

My career commenced in South Africa in 1995, where, after completing my National Diploma in Building, I joined RH Rens & Associates as a candidate Quantity Surveyor. more… In 1999 I completed my BTech QS degree and became a co-principal in 2000, where the firms name was changed to Rens & Leonard. In early 2002 I became the sole member, up until 2008, where I then took on two partners and the firm was restructured into Poto Leonard & Moyce Quantity Surveyors (PLM). In 2020 I resigned as a director from PLM and relocated to NZ to join BQH as Regional Manager of their new Tauranga Office.

My general experience includes all facets of Quantity Surveying from inception through to final account and my expertise are considered to be estimating, financial reporting and contract administration.

If I’m not in the office you will either find me spending time with my wife and two daughters or on the ocean with a fishing rod in my hand.

Paul Bishop

I commenced my career in 1989, as a graduate quantity surveyor at a specialist main contractor Mansell’s in London, UK. more… In 1992 I joined a specialist sub-contractor of high-quality brickwork for two years before entering one of the largest Consultant QS’s in the UK at the time Gleeds ; as a Senior QS. In 1999, I made a move to the Middle East in pursuit of mega projects and have had the privilege to have worked on some of the world’s most challenging projects in four middle eastern countries as Director of a large worldwide multi-disciplinary company. In 2011, I decided to move to New Zealand permanently, with my family, following the Christchurch Earthquakes. I worked for a major insurer for two years, then established my own consultancy prior to joining BQH as Regional Manager

My expertise covers all stages of quantity surveying; however I have a strong interest in applied statistics to model costs for increased accuracy, as well as emerging technologies in our industry. I am also on the NZIQS’s expert witness register.

When I’m not at work I like to spend time with my family, rebuilding engines, writing, and tramping
Richard van Zyl

During the last year of my undergraduate study in South Africa, I worked as a candidate quantity surveyor for a small residential developer managing subcontractors. more… After graduating in 2006, I joined IBP Construction Consultants in Johannesburg as a junior quantity surveyor, and during this time, I completed my honours degree and obtained Membership status with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. In 2011 I moved to CES Group to expand my knowledge in infrastructure and power generation. In 2016 our family made a move to New Zealand, where I joined BQH Limited.

From inception to final account stages I have experience in estimating, budgeting and cash flow, measurement, and general contract administration and advice. Contract experience includes NZS3910 and 3916.

On weekends I like to spend family time playing games during the colder months and cycling or hiking in the great outdoors in the summertime.

Richard Meakin

I commenced my career in quantity surveying as a graduate with Christie and Partners, Dundee, Scotland, in 2004. more… In 2012 I made the decision to emigrate to New Zealand and commenced work with BQH Ltd later that year. In 2017 I made the decision to move to the Hawkes Bay where I was a quantity surveyor for BR Turfrey’s Ltd (National Roofing and Plumbing Contractor). I rejoined BQH Ltd in 2021.

My expertise includes estimating, measurement and schedule of quantities, contract administration and cost management.

Thom first joined BQH in 2014, working in our Auckland office after finishing his degree. more… After delivering several high profile projects, such as the M-Social Hotel and the Hellmann facility at Auckland Airport, he took off for his OE mainly in The Netherlands, where he worked with a multinational QS firm delivering services for corporate clients. After his OE we enthusiastically welcomed him back to our Auckland team, where he applies his new perspectives to leading teams in excellent QS services.

Grant Aicken

I commenced my career as a student quantity surveyor at Farrans Construction in Belfast in 2013. more… I graduated with a First Class (Hons) in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management from Ulster University in 2015. After graduating, I started with Rainey and Best in Belfast where I worked on five-star hotels, including a major renovation of Claridge’s in London and a new five-star hotel in France. In 2017, I moved to New Zealand to join BQH as a Quantity Surveyor then as an Associate in 2019.

My expertise includes compiling schedules/bills of quantities, design modification cost advice, budgeting and estimating. My post contract roles include financial reporting, variation management and contract administration (NEC3, JCT and NZS3910).

Tiaan van Heerden

I started my career as a foreman in 2009 working for a main contractor in South Africa while completing my bachelors degree in quantity surveying. more… After completing my degree in 2012, I moved on to work for Norval Wentzel Steinberg, where I worked myself up into a managerial position as an Associate. In 2019 I relocated to Auckland and joined BQH as an Associate.

My expertise ranges from estimating, budgeting and value engineering of projects to negotiating and agreeing variations throughout the construction phase of projects.

Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, hunting, fishing and golf which offers me great opportunities to indulge in the outdoors.

I graduated from Massey university with a Bachelor of Construction in 2017. more… Before working as a quantity surveyor, I worked in the water treatment industry after completing studies in science and engineering at the University of Auckland.

My strengths are budget estimating and administration including financial reporting.

When I am not at work, I enjoy sailing with my family and gardening.

I commenced my career after completing my bachelors degree in Quantity Surveying in 2014. more… I start my career with an Auckland residential contractor where I gained experience in technical aspects of quantity surveying. On completion, I transferred to a professional quantity surveying consultancy, Quantum, in Auckland. Immediately prior to joining BQH in 2018, I worked in one of New Zealand’s largest home building company, Mike Greer Homes Auckland Office.

My areas of expertise include budget preparation, estimating, cost planning, contract administration. I can fluently speak Mandarin and Cantonese.

In my spare time, I devote myself to yoga, including aerial yoga, hatha yoga, and pilates.

Jennifer Jian

I commenced my career in 2013, as a quantity surveyor cadet at Fletcher Construction in Auckland. more… I became a quantity surveyor after 3 years cadetship working on several New Zealand’s most prominent projects, such as Commercial Bay and the University of Auckland. In 2018 I transferred to a consulting quantity surveying company in Auckland until I joined BQH in early 2021.

My expertise ranges from cost planning to contract administration, budget control, engineer to the contract in NZS3910, drawdown/bank report.

When I have spare time, I enjoy yoga and zumba – I am also a fan of travelling and skiing to get myself refreshed and motivated.

Prior to being a Quantity Surveyor, I was formally an Architectural Builder for 4 years with experience on multi-million dollar residential homes for high profile clients.

On top of my strong knowledge of construction, my areas of expertise include cost planning, contract documentation, and contract administration.

I am an avid Rugby player and Snowboarder. In my spare time I enjoy gaming and exploring new places with friends and family.

I commenced my career in October 2020 as a Junior QS for BQH, providing support their new office and recently appointed Regional Manager. more… I am also studying my degree at Massey university and aim to graduate in 2024.

I am proficient at project administration. Assisting on financial tracking of local projects, involving tasks such as prepping variation price assessments, extensions of time, monthly claims, and documenting communications.

When I’m not working you can find me on the volleyball court or out socialising with friends and family.

Caitlin Jones

In 2016, I began my career in the construction industry when I joined a private Building Consultant practice as an office manager and personal assistant. more… In mid 2018 I joined BQH as a cadet quantity surveyor and I have been developing my technical skills within a team of qualified and experienced colleagues since.

I have a range of experience in both pre-contract and post-contract work. I excel in estimating, procurement and the valuation of progress claims and variations. I have proven skills in administration and a solid understanding of the construction process from inception to completion.

During my downtime, I enjoy pottering around the garden and getting out amongst the breeze at one of Auckland’s many volcano top’s and bush walks.

In July 2020, I embarked on my career to becoming a Quantity Surveyor, studying at Unitec to gain a foothold in the construction industry and now completing my Degree at Massey University. more… On completion of my first semester, I started my cadetship at BQH as a Quantity Surveying Cadet. Prior to deciding on a career as a QS I worked for Tesla Motors New Zealand, as part of the sales and marketing team based in Auckland, breaking Tesla into the New Zealand market.

My strengths consist of statistical calculations, cash flow tracking / reporting, rate calculations based on historical data and managing costx rate database.

When I’m free from work and study, you can find me on the bike, heading out for a run, hitting the slopes in winter, or enjoying the weekend on the yacht.
